brian -- will state on-list only that i don't agree
with everything you say, but DO agree that bergman's
70's films are remarkable works (notably the ones in
exile -- _from the life of the marionettes_ (1980, ok)
being his most underrated film) and that fassbinder
was surely one of the last great directors of the
century (tarkovsky and kieslowski were two others).

in fact, all i really wanted to say was:

von trier < fassbinder, by a factor of funf.
