"Democrats are screening Michael Moore's Farenheit [sic] 9/11 in Washington, DC. How much more open do you want the opposition to be?"
-- Nathan Newman, 6/24/04, 10:10 AM, posted to the LBO message board in response to
chuck0's question "Why aren't the Democrats fighting Bush more openly?"
of course this submission may be challenged because an argument could be made as to whether or not nathan wrote this himself or hired someone from Comedy Central to write it for him. but i'd like to suggest the LBO board give him the benefit of the doubt.
i'm a bit flummoxed, though, because i thought theater owners were screening mike's movie. some are democrats, some may be republicans, many may be politically neutral -- political agnostics. all are interested in making money.
the democratic party, being the largest party in the USA, it's likely a lot of those theater owners are democrats. but maybe nathan means democrats are having private screenings, or screenings to small groups where only the party faithful, or those who aren't nasty, combative third party types, are invited. the group enjoys the movie while drinking tang, eating delicious twinkies and making polite yet substantive political conversation. (some may even be seen holding hands during the movie.) the event is followed by prayer only in the south and other bible belt areas. in remaining areas, a moment of silence devoted to the contemplation of moving-further-right-of-center-in-order-to-get-votes is enjoyed before the viewing breaks up and contented participants go their separate ways in a republican nation.
