A year or two ago there was a long thread on this list in which quite a few posters hung tenaciously to the idea that there was an evolutionary reason for the "trophy wife" phenomena. It was quite disgraceful. One of the features of widespread beliefs of this sort is unawareness of what a "trait" is. (Richard Levins discussed this briefly some time ago on the Science for the People list.) Yesterday's science column in the WSJ discussed Just-so stories.
