No, the polls were trending against them near the end. That's unsurprising, since Roger Noriega, Otto Reich, and the rest of that loathsome crew were publicly saying that an FMLN victory would damage relations with the United States. That wasn't exactly big news in the US, but it made headlines in El Salvador for understandable reasons. It basically translates as: "If the FMLN wins, the oligarchy will have a few thousand people killed to overthrow the government with the connivance of Uncle Sam." Schafik has acknowledged that the ARENA candidate won, but publicly refused to congratulate him, saying (quite correctly) that this was an attack on Salvadoran democracy, such as it is.
Pre-emptive note to Michael Pugliese: we can all do without any claims from you that there's no reason to favor the FMLN over ARENA, or a list of ten URLs about Roque Dalton.
