Dear List:

Emma Goldman was quoted as saying:

>"It is essential that we realize once and for all that man is much more of a sex creature than a moral creature. The former is inherent, the other is grafted on." -- Emma Goldman

While I am all for the increased understanding of human beings as sexual creatures, I also feel we are moral creatures. I think this simplistic dichotomy does a disservice to the complexity of human reality.

Also, sexuality and morality are both the products of genetics and environment. Her claim implies that that which is inherent is good. Some would say that human beings are inherently aggressive? Does that make aggression good?

Finally, the imperative that we "realize once and for all . . ." is just a tad popish as if any fact of human nature could be settled definitivelty. Both human nature and humans' understanding/conception of human nature are constantly evolving. Being fundamental, e.g. "marriage is between a man and a woman," is usually not very helpful.
