I started to say Tom Wolfe, but I dont think any "decent" follower of Bush would ever allude to the Kool-Aid Acid Test in reference to him/herself.
Anyway, is it anything like a Moon-pie eating follower of Sun Myung Moon?

I think your hunch is right but that alot of people simply don't know the origins of the phrase and for those that do its kind of like an inside joke about their partying-exploratory youth.
