I was a substitute teacher for 5 yrs. in Oakland, '85-90. W/ an "emergency credential, " after passing the CBEST. (I was incredulous that I had to sign a McCarthy era loyalty oath, that I thought a Supreme Court decision had thrown out after a UC, Berkeley Prof. refused to sign one in the 50's.) First month I was paid $57 a day, after a long NEA/OEA strike, one of the demands being raise sub pay to a hundred a day, our pay was raisedto $92.
I could have had the entirety of an extra two yrs. tuition and books, paid for 100%, after my BA in Soc. taking the requisite Education classes at an otherwise very pricey private college in the Oakland Hills towards Orinda, if I had agreed to teach for 2 or 3 yrs. afterwards in Oakland at any high school in the flatlands, besides Skyline, the school for the rich kids.
Also, lots of school districts help to arrange good mortgages for new teachers.
