Hari, At one time I read Thomson's books until I had almost worn the ink off the pages, and I still have a warm place in my heart for him. I learned a lot from his books.
But, first de Ste. Croix (Class Struggles in the Ancient Greek World) and then Ellen Meiksins Wood (Peasant-Citizen and Slave: Foundations of Athenian Democracy), both Marxist scholars, have undercut many, even most, of Thomson's arguments. Even so, his books are exciting to read and, even when wrong, are thought-provoking.
