substitute teaching. I discovered that out here in Kansas City you need to have a state teaching certificate to serve as a substitute. There might be a poor school district around town that doesn't require a teaching certification, but I haven't looked too comprehensively.

If you want to teach full-time, I suspect that there must be some sort of lateral entry program--you can teach w/o a certificate as long as you jump thru some hoops to show you're getting the certificate. It might be worth it--the school years would be pretty hard, but you've got the summers, and if you've already got an MLS or other advanced degrees the pay shouldn't be too bad to start.

My partner has been teaching this year. He tells me the kids can be amazingly brutal with one another, but they are also really sharp and interesting. The school he teaches in is about 80% African American and about the same proportion on subsidized or free lunch. He showed them _The Birds_ last week, and during the scene where the birds attack the people at the birthday party and they are all running inside, one girl starts saying, "Get the cake! Get the cake!" Which is perfect, since if you're going to have a movie in which some birds mysteriously attack a birthday party and ignore the cake, it only makes sense that the stupid white people having the party should save it rather than the little kids. And he said they were all about the lesbian tension between Suzanne Pleschette and Tippi Hedren.

Anyway, I hope you find something.

Christian
