No vision, mouth covered; they can't charge, bite or spit at their torturers. They can't register their torturers faces in memory for possible later revenge etc. If you had your eyes and mouth and were going through what they went through, you would use your mouth as a weapon to defend yourself, right? You've got *nothing* to lose.
