I published a little item on my blog (http://leninology.blogspot.com) yesterday about the torture of Iraqi prisoners - just two paragraphs cut and pasted from the BBC website. Strange to relate, in the space of 24 hours, those paragraphs disappeared entirely. I was alerted to this by Tex of Antiwar.com (http://www.antiwar.com/blog/comments.php?id=P862_0_1_0) .

So, I've written to Mr Sambrooke:

Dear Mr Sambrook,

I wonder if I could ask you why the content of a story published by the BBC News website on 4/05/04 about the torture photos has since been dramatically altered. The newly edited story is now here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3684381.stm

In the original story, the following two paragraphs were included:

The lawyer for one of the soldiers accused of being involved in the events which prompted outrage around the world said orders had been given for the photographs to be taken.

"They were part of the psychological manipulation of the prisoners being interrogated," Guy Womack, attorney for Charles Graner Jr, told NBC television.

"It was being controlled and devised by the military intelligence community and other governmental agencies, including the CIA," he said, adding that the soldiers were simply "following orders".

They no longer appear to be there. Is this legitemate editing or censorship? For, if those paragraphs are accurate, then I suggest that's an important part of the story.

I look forward very much to hearing from you.
