If memory serves, it was Stalin's outlawing of abortion that caused Sidney Hook to leave the CP, right?

BTW the USSR persecuted only male homosexuals. Female homosexuality was never outlawed. As far as I know, in the post-Stalin era anyway, "punishments" for homosexuality were quite arbitrarily applied. People I know who lived in that era say that they never heard of anybody being locked up for homosexuality (but this may just be because it wasn't reported in the media) and that the law was in practice invoked only in the case of sex with minors.
