Berlusconi next? and John Kerry's options
Yesterday's Financial Times reported that "moral indignation endangers Berlusconi's election prospects," indicating that Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi may go the way of Spain's Aznar, since some 65% of the population opposes Italy's continued participation in the Iraqi venture, especially since the release of the US torture photos. Berlusconi is a loathsome figure, Italy's homegrown version of Rupert Murdoch and a fervent ass-kisser of George Bush. His departure would make for the further diplomatic isolation of the US and British rogue states.
Meanwhile, the same issue of the FT notes that "Kerry avoids anti-war campaigning,", even though "the most recent polling data have prompted the question that there may at least be an argument for Mr. Kerry to consider the 'Zapatero option.'" As a result, even though polls now indicate that for the first time the majority of the US population is against the war, "Mr. Kerry's current position appears to be doing little to help him capitalise on President [sic] George W. Bush's biggest problem."
The current talking points of the squatters in the White House claim that Kerry is a "flip-flopper," and that he most certainly is -- which makes him, as a banal and opportunistic politician, infinitely preferable to the gang of fanatics around Bush whose entire purpose in life is to cut our throats. People interested in actually ending the war should continue to work to make it worth Kerry's while to pursue the "Zapatero option."
