Have you read the Memoirs of General Grant? One of the great works of American literature. And Clausewitz had considerably more of a "mind" than short snippets from him indicate. Also what about Giap? Or for that matter check the current NYRB for a review of a book on Washington's Trenton/Princeton campaign.

Though Clemenceau was essentially correct when he said that war was too important to leave to the generals. In general, X is to important to leave _completely_ or _ultimately_ to the Experts in X, though I am rather more respectful of a good deal of expert opinion up to a poing than are many on this list. I still think that Hawkes was perfectly within is rights to write the review of Gould he did, so my complaint was never really with him, but I also still think the book review editor of the Nation was an asshole for selecting Hawkes to review that book rather than someone competent in both biology and literature (and there are quite a few).
