MosNews.com May 25, 2004 Controversial Russian MP Praying for a Bush Victory
The outspoken and eccentric Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of Russia s self-termed liberal democrats, has announced that he intends to pray for George Bush win in November s presidential elections, RIA Novosti reports.
In the past, Zhirinovsky has been a vociferous critic of the war in Iraq and Washington s actions.
We need to rejoice, to praise Bush and to ask God for him to win in November. Bush means war in Iraq and is a gift for Russia, Zhirinovsky said. He has apparently changed his views on the Iraq war after Russia benefited from skyrocketing oil prices.
$40 a barrel is a gift, a holiday for Russia, Zhirinovsky said at an informal meeting with the media, sipping his beer. He also noted that Iraqis will benefit from the U.S. presence when U.S. soldiers build new air-conditioned prisons.
Zhirinovsky is well-known for his controversial political comments and the willingness to express the most outrageous opinions.
