I am inclined to agree with him. Countless/uncountable numbers of dead Vietnamese/Lao/Cambodians vs some 58,000 US fatalities. And consider the isolation and immiseration which followed. Similarly, the US won the Cold War, both by outlasting the USSR and by subsequently imposing an incredibly punitive 'reform' regime under which many million former Soviet citizens' lives ended unnecessarily early.
In neither case did the empire get what it claimed it wanted (free market democracies), but it sure beat the shit out of the poor citizens constituting its erstwhile opponent.
