No, the problem is religion itself, which constitutes equal-opportunity mind
fungus. The U.S. is by far the most religious society among industrial
nations and by no coincidence it is also the most ethically primitive and
the one that wastes the most energy on the idiotic, toxic, zero-sum games
that religion thrusts into public life. The U.S. will remain a savage state
in the community of nations as long as the sacralized tribalism of religion
remains a potent force in U.S. politics.
