Yes, but the larger problem is that a vast majority of people believe that simply casting a ballot every few years is the acme of democracy. So when you tell them that, yes, voting is important, but it should be part of a more participatory process and not serve as ratification for elite decisions, they usually scratch their heads and wonder what you're smoking. People don't like being told that they're not truly free, esp when the likes of Bush and his propaganda outlets flatter them into thinking that if they were any freer, they'd fly. I've had these conversations with rightwing relatives, and it's tough. You might be able to cut through some of the resistance they've built up, but sooner or later you'll hit the granite layer of Fear. That's what drives many Americans. That's why so many live in an unreal world. That's why a barely-competent shoe salesman like Bush gets elected (in addition to the dirty tricks under discussion). Many people don't want to analyze the country they live in. So long as the mall's open, all is well.
