In a sense it doesn't matter whether or not that anti-gay sentiment tilted the balance.

If you think class is the fundamental organizing principle for politics and society, then anti-gay or anti-minority sentiment is just something that has to be overcome, with offense and defense, by hook or crook.

A question is whether the right approach is to promote secular partnership rights first, and soft-peddle marriage, or make marriage the kind of moral issue that civil rights was.

My bias is towards the former. For one thing, civil rights may have been a successful moral crusade, but there are still quite a few unconverted, many in the working class.

Do people think this is a sell-out of gay interests, or smart pragmatism?

A nice excuse to bash fags under the guise of populism?

The data isn't there to support the argument that a wave of anti-gay sentiment brought a surge in Bush's support. It's always there, it's a major part of the electorate, but it wasn't the decisive factor in explaining this year's results.
