Perhaps what is not being fully appreciated in the
christian/voting/morals discussion is the pervasive racism an bigotry of
rural America. Although it is rarely displayed on a personal level, it
is quite simply generally accepted as the reason things are the way
they are; a handy, bumper sticker world view that can be bent to explain
damn near everything.
After a near lifetime spent dodging deer in the cornfield country of
Indiana, I've come to appreciate the close correlation between
"conservative" christian beliefs and a bigoted outlook. Some of this is
simply fear of everything "different", the more fearful, the more
conservative. A majority however, is simply racism.
For those that haven't experienced this firsthand and for an extended
period, it is easy to underestimate its importance in red state
political decision making.
