Carl is on to something here. Partially anyway. One does not have to be
agnostic to avoid idolatry and blasphemy, but one does have to avoid
mistaking the human for the divine. Life and death for instance is the
providence of god not man. Calculated killing in this sense is a sin
because it involves trespassing on the providence of god. Another more
interesting case is that of worldly laws. Laws are the creation of man
(sic). As such they are guides but not the absolute rule for final judgment
is the providence of god not man. The point: the human is fallible, the
divine is not. This simple axiom contains a philisophical paradox but those
who attempt to crack it directly will find themselves in a bad infinity for
it simply is an irreducible paradox.
