Well, yeah. It's not entirely irrational though. Many Americans are a
couple of paychecks away from destitution and that is scary. The feeling
of safety is connected with everything that is shared/social; as that
domain shrinks, fear increases.

Yeah, no argument here.
But as for fear in Eastern Europe...I don't know. I remember real fear in Romania -- at least among the intelligentsia.
