This is just too easy. You're on.

There will be no legal-constitutional action taken against the Bush regime. None. Much of their time has been spent assuring that there will not be, ever. The Bushites are incapable of governing at any level, but their skill at seizing and maintaining power is awe-inspiring. They sweat the details.

The historical situations are entirely different. In 1974 the left was at a generation-long ascendant at a mass level (even if much of the 60s activist core was feeling weakened and frustrated, a typical historical asynchronicity). The Democrats controlled Congress--and it wasn't just a single election one-off, they owned the place. The press was going through a last fit of feistiness, playing catch-up with a public that was way ahead of them. Most people actually gave a damn if the president was a lying crook, rather than merely assuming it. Capitalists actually acted like a rational ruling class, dumping Nixon when he threatened the system, not acting as if the world's greatest economic and military power (the one that they, you know, depend on) was like a mob bust-out operation, a front used to fleece the suckers of all they have before torching the place.

And even THEN Nixon would have walked if the self-destructive loon hadn't recorded his own plotting on tape.

Now, if you would have said "I say the Bush administration is going to get fucked worse than Mussolini in 1945," I'd think, well, maybe. You'd have to move your timetable by a few years and add the loss of a few million lives but Bush and his crew are perfectly capable of bringing the United States of America down. With a good chunk of humanity along with it.

So, this must mean the Democrats (wait, the Greens! the Socialist Party! Why hallucinate small?) will gain control of Congress in the 2006 elections, and mete out righteous justice, correct? Unfortunately, if the latest electoral sham is allowed to stand, and odds are it will, then the Democrats will never win a national election of any importance again. Because elections will be in the bag, and everyone but the naive will know it, even if no one talks about it. Whether the Democrats will be allowed to hang around at all may depend on how much the Republicans feel they need PR window dressing, the official one-party state thing being maybe a bit too much over the top. Not that over-the-topness seems to bother the Republicans so far...

If I'm wrong, I'll catch one of the pigs flying past my house and send you the pork chops.

BTW, I really, really want to lose this bet. I have three kids I love dearly and I am not feeling good about the future. Maybe it shows.
