Of course nothing will bring universal happiness (but free money, free 
time and sex for all maybe -I suggest this as a program for the left).
Socialism can be seen as just a program of reduction of damages of 
capitalism, and notwithtstanding all its possible negative consequences, 
it seems likely to be closer to the paretian optimum of the best for the 
most. In practice, I find very interesting the recent electoral 
successess of former communist parties in most of Eastern europe, where 
people experienced both systems (and now "ostalgia" is very trendy)...
