Yes, it is as if the word "joy" has been completely "appropriated" by the capitalist culture and connotes crass consumerism.

Unfortunately, as is all to usual, the Left just reacts, instead of redefining the word, they just become "anti". And so, it is that you find a culture of ugliness and gloom among much of the Left. This has begun to change recently, thanks to certain sectors of the Left. One manifestation of this is the nature of demonstrations which, as Hardt points out, have become more colorful, playful, joyful in recent times.
