Assuming the position and interests of the exploited and oppressed, i don't see many desirable alternatives to Douglass' attitude (unless defending some sort of fascist attitude...). Or are you referring to the Douglass' solution of escaping from its slavery instead than combat (and die)? In this sense, maybe the leftist (?) guru Negri draw the idea of "exodus" from the memories of Douglass? But the lack of imagination (and positive aims), courage and structural strength of the left is diffused much beyond the US, and there are not many places to escape (personally i am thinking about asking political asylum to Venezuela).
