Of some interest, but my question was not the number who subscribed to the Nation, or even the number who read it occasionally (which would be considerably larger than the number subscribing) but the percentage of the entire popoulation that even knew of the magazine's existence! Note that my post named three organizations and one person in addition to the publications mentioned. The issue concerns the _visibility_ of "The Left." Concern about style or content of the "left message" is premature unless it incorporates some program for gaining _attention_ to that message.
Full many a Gem of purest Ray serene,
The dark unfathom'd Caves of Ocean bear:
Full many a Flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desart Air.
Some Village-_Hampden_ that with dauntless Breast
The little Tyrant of his Fields withstood;
Some mute inglorious _Milton_ here may rest,
Some _Cromwell_ guiltless of his Country's Blood.
