it was a dumb question--that's why it was ignored. the issue we were discussing was the left broadly defined, as in to the left of, oh say, lieberman. for months now, we've been talking about how we can nourish the soil for the seeds of a socialist society. Michael Pollack talked about it in terms of changing the direction of the wind and harnassing the wind with a sail. yes, yes. we know already, you don't buy it, will never buy it, and think we are a bunch of fucksticks for bothering.
as i mentioned the other night, there are different kinds of narratives out there that explain to people what is wrong with society. if we don't develop a decent one (through agit prop like Moore's, NYT columns like Ehrenreich (and, btw, i mentioned her to a client the other day and she KNEW who Ehrenreich was! She's not anywhere near being a lefty) then the only thing people like me will hear are those narratives when we start to sense something is wrong with society.
e.g., i heard about marxism in high school. i'd been through three plant closings by that time. i was ready for the message. nonetheless, there wasn't enough of it out there. by the time I was 18 or so, i was campaigning for a libertarian b/c that vision offered a compelling vision at the time.
