I haven't read the NY piece, and God knows I'm far
from an epidemiologist, but my humch is no. I think
the alarmism is probably the result of a combination
of understandable scare tactics on the part of Russian
health care officials on the Western press's
inclination to see a crisis in Russia every couple of
monyhs (remember the great summer "Russian banking
crisis" that never happened?). At least a couple of
years ago when I last saw the stats, 94% of HIV
infections in Russia were the result of needle sharing
by IV drug addicts. My hunch is that it will burn
through the IV drug-using population (which is large)
and the street prostitute population (those two
overlap considerably), plus women infected by their
IV-drug-using partners, and then stabilize like it has
seemingly everywhere else except sub-Saharan Africa.
