I posted the same essay to a couple of other listservs as well: <http://archives.econ.utah.edu/archives/marxism/2004w39/msg00270.htm> and <http://archives.econ.utah.edu/archives/pen-l/2004w39/msg00131.htm>. No one has asked why I posted the essay or tried to second-guess why I posted it on either listserv, though.
>Yoshie thinks I'm anti-Arab
The author of the essay that I posted here, Zuleikha Mahmood, is of Afghan descent, so she isn't an Arab.
In any case, why assume an essay about a young Afghan-American lesbian going to a Muslim bridal shower is about you? That's a very bizarre response.
>Apparently, she might also think you have to arrive in the U.S. or
>Europe before you can become interesting as a "young Muslim."
I've also posted here and elsewhere about a Palestinian lesbian-feminist organization (<http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipermail/lbo-talk/Week-of-Mon-20040531/012222.html> and <http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipermail/lbo-talk/Week-of-Mon-20040607/012284.html>), transsexuals in Iran, Egypt, etc. (<http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipermail/lbo-talk/Week-of-Mon-20040802/017371.html>), and other things concerning gender and sexuality in other parts of the world, including nations whose populations are predominantly Muslim. But Muslims who live in the United States and Europe, the majority of whose populations are non-Muslim, confront a different set of objective and subjective circumstances and challenges than what Muslims who live in predominantly Muslim countries confront.
>My best friend in the world. . . .
That's a vintage phrase. -- Yoshie
