It appears that you have succeeded in provoking a boring conversation about me among Michael Dawson and yourself, rather than provoking an interesting conversation about an Afghan-American lesbian, Muslims and sexuality, etc.
Am I supposed to be flattered because you hold me and my old opinion (I've been posting here since the beginning of this listserv) to be of more interest than an essay by a young Afghan-American lesbian, the first essay of its kind posted to the list?
>Since we're asking pointed questions, why do you always have to
>position yourself as the enlightened one surrounded by hidebound
>dimwits?
I hold work of many leftists (and some non-leftists) in high regard, about which I have often posted here (and some of them are posting or lurking here), so your allegation is false. In any case, though, why does what you misrepresent as my "positioning" have anything to do with Zuleikha Mahmood's essay? If my so-called "positioning" is what you wanted to talk about all along, you might at least take a posting in which I actually state my opinion -- e.g., <http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipermail/lbo-talk/Week-of-Mon-20040927/021871.html>, <http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipermail/lbo-talk/Week-of-Mon-20040927/022230.html>, <http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/pipermail/lbo-talk/Week-of-Mon-20040927/022279.html> among recent postings -- and point to what you regard as evidence of my alleged "positioning." -- Yoshie
