"luddite" is, and always has been, the idiotic put-down label used by apologists for big capital against any form of popular resistance to their masters' economic schemes.

Completely false. Electricity can be stored in the form of hydrogen (via wind-turbine driven electrolysis) and released as needed (via fuel cells). A tiny fraction of our planet's aeolian resources would be sufficient to provide an energy supply far exceeding American per-capita levels for everyone in the world and for a future as long as can be imagined. The transition to the hydrogen economy needs to be begun right away with massive publically financed programs of capital construction and (while economies of scale and production-driven technological improvement phase in) subsidies to the initial users of hydrogen-stored electricity. If this be Luddism make the most of it.
