`Hemingway Never Did This'
I read that he lost a suitcase full of manuscripts on a train and that they never were recovered... John Taber

Hemingway wrote about it or referenced it in Garden of Eden (I think). In the story, the girlfriend is pissed off at the main character, a writer, who wrote about their love affair. She burns the only manuscript.
The character reflects on the sensation of discovery. He says something to the effect,
``...it was the feeling you get when you drive too fast around a corner and see the road is gone.''
I have to say, I was so appalled yesterday morning I just laughed. It wasn't the ice cold electric flash Hemingway had in mind. I've had that feeling in another context.
Imagine rock climbing up the inside of a blind slightly over hanging corner. There has to be a jug hold up above on the other side, but when you move over the edge on delicate holds to see, you find nothing but a string of other delicate holds leading upward... You think, oh, fuck.
. . .
Thanks to everybody who responded. It is an interesting kind of test. Just exactly how much do you live in the words you compose?
