US chip maker Micron to build factory in China
Associated Press New York, October 18
US-based Micron Technology Inc, one of the world's leading memory chip makers, plans to build its first factory in China, to assemble and test semiconductors, the company said on Monday.
"If negotiations are smooth, we can start construction by the middle of next year," said Shanghai-based corporate affairs and communications manager for Boise, Idaho-based Micron Charles Xu.
Micron currently does sales, marketing and chip design in China and plans to spend "likely more" than $100 million (euro 80 million) over the next three to five years, Xu said.
In September, Micron reported fiscal year 2004 net income of $157 million (euro 125.8 million), up from a net loss of $1.3 billion (euro 1 billion) in fiscal year 2003.
