Chest Pains Send Bill Clinton To Hospital

POSTED: 12:09 PM EDT September 3, 2004 UPDATED: 12:49 PM EDT September 3, 2004

Former President Bill Clinton checked himself into a New York City hospital on Friday suffering from chest pains, Democratic party officials said.

Broadcast news outlets reported that the nation's 42nd president is hospitalized in New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

CNN said that a former senior Clinton administration official said that Clinton went to the hospital reporting that he was tired and had chest discomfort, but then he was told he needed quadruple bypass surgery. CNN reported that he will have surgery Saturday.

Former press secretary George Stephanopoulous told ABC News that the former president had been treated for acid reflux disease while he was in the White House. However, he said there was never any indication that Clinton might have had a heart condition.

"He consistently did get good, solid physicals when he was in the White House," Stephanopoulous said. "In recent years since he's left the White House, he's been terrific shape, on the South Beach diet and in very good physical health, apparently."

Bill Clinton canceled a two-day joint trip with his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, across upstate New York because of the medical issues, a source familiar with the situation said Friday.

Spokesmen for the former president and for the senator couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

The former president turned 58 last month.

"We're in a fucking stagmire."
