usually, chronic alcoholics have a high tolerance for alcohol. perhaps, reforming alcoholics on god have reduced tolerance. although AA disputes that, claiming that belief in a higher being is important.
shrub could be taking antabuse or variant thereof, which could give him a low tolerance to too much after shave if it contains alcohol. i'd hate to think what the combination of antabuse and god could do to a human being like shrub who identifies with moses. usually, those types are found in mental institutions.
