I think you're partly right about this, but there's also an angle suggested by Michael Zweig: people like much of the work itself, but hate the pay, the boss, the working conditions. So, a nurse likes taking care of patients, but hates the way the docs treat her; a Wal-Mart worker likes helping customers, but hates the tiny paycheck, endless supervision, and the sexist bosses.
