They buy these trinkets in order to shore up a misconceived notion of self. This artcile from today's New York Times shows how pathological things have become:

The scariest sentence:

"The fashion industry is jumping to fill stores with clothes when America's luxury shoppers want them: all the time."

Just as there is no longer any true television season, tnhere are no longer any distinct fashion seasons. People's needs to satisfy their fetishes and cravings are expanding exponentially.
