I'm one now. I can't believe it. Just a mile from my house, they're flooded.
How many miles away is Ivan? Hundreds! And yet, this is what the storm surge from a Cat 5 horriblecane is doing. And we haven't had any rain from this one yet--we're missing out on the feeder bands that dumped last time.
Holy smokes, batman! It's wild. All the little shops (hardware store, Goodwill, a Mediterranean deli, the infamous Master's Bait Shop, a gym, etc.) are under water. And to the west of these shops are, not just multi-million dollar homes, but plenty of ordinary homes, and even what is called, around here, a "bhetto" (suburban ghetto). A bhetto is what people call 'burb housing developments that aren't deed restricted. As a consequence, people put chicken coops in their backyard, build ramshackle additions, and have cars on blocks in their front yard. One is a mostly white "bhetto," the other is mostly black. (I've always found it interesting that you have multimillion dollar homes just half a mile from "bhettos" in prime real estate. Not too long ago, this area was pretty undeveloped and you could get property for a steal.) Also under water is a place not far from here where homeless live. Well, a couple of them stole my groceries a couple of week's ago so they have batteries, sterno, canned goods, etc.! :)
