Labor's chances of winning the federal election will have a boost thanks to a announces a strong preference deal with the Greens, it was reported.

The Australian newspaper said Labor was expected to direct preferences to the Greens candidates in the Senate, in exchange for the minor party's support in 150 House of Representatives seats.

It cited "well placed sources" as confirming that negotiators from the Greens and the ALP had concluded talks on a potential "national deal".

Newspoll sees Labor still trailing

Labor leader Mark Latham's personal standing has risen since the leaders debate last Sunday but this has not transplanted into support in key marginal seats, it was reported.

The Australian newspaper said the Coalition still held "the narrowest of leads" over the ALP in the most marginal seats, but Labor was still within striking distance of an election win.

The paper said the latest Newspoll showed the Coalition had virtually the same primary vote as it was at the 2001 election, although Labor was still competitive on second preferences.

It said the survey of voters in the 12 most marginal seats in Australia showed the Coalition with a clear lead on primary votes, 46 per cent - down from 47 per cent two weeks ago - to Labor's unchanged 40 per cent.

After a rise from six per cent to seven per cent for the Greens, the two-party preferred vote lifted for Labor from 48 per cent to 49.5 per cent.

The Coalition's fell from 52 per cent to 50.5 per cent in the past two weeks.

The survey, taken during the week after the debate and Labor's education policy launch, showed Mr Latham's personal standing had risen, with satisfaction jumping eight percentage points to 59 per cent

Both parties would not comment on the issue, the paper said.
