In short, two main reasons why Californians voted against the single payer initiative were:

1. Too much government interference in individuals' life 2. Potential for abuse by undocumented aliens.

This is consistent with what I was saying time and again: this is a conservative and xenophobic country whose citizens would rather take a personal loss then see "aliens" gain even a tiny bit. Not everyone, of course, but a substantial hare if not the majority of the population.

And these are the sentiments that politicians learned to exploit quite well. This is why the war in Iraq may be going badly as far rational objectives are concerned - but as long as "our boys" will be blowing Iraqi "aliens" to pieces, these folks will be voting for Bush who gave them that spectacle.
