Announcing PublicBonds.org New Website Promotes Accountability and "Demystifies" the Bond Market
Washington, D.C. -Good Jobs First (GJF) today announced the launch of a new website at www.publicbonds.org. The Public Bonds site is a resource for community activists, public officials, journalists, researchers and others who are interested in promoting accountability in government borrowing for public infrastructure, prisons or schools.
The site seeks to demystify the world of municipal bonds by explaining key concepts, processes, and risks associated with bonds. It includes a candid step-by-step explanation of how bonds are issued. It also profiles the leading players in the bond market, including underwriters, rating agencies, insurers, bond lawyers and regulators.
"The bond market is a powerful force yet it is poorly understood," said Philip Mattera, GJF's Research Director and editor of the site. "We hope our new site will help taxpayers better understand what happens when government borrows money for construction and other major projects."
Interested community groups, students, and others can use the information and tools provided on PublicBonds to engage in debates and promote public participation in decisions related to the issuance of debt.
The project was funded by the Open Society Institute.
PublicBonds.org was produced by the Corporate Research Project of Good Jobs First. The Corporate Research Project helps non-profit organizations understand the worlds of business and finance. Good Jobs First promotes corporate and government accountability in economic development.
