What "America" are we talking about, incidentally? The characterization of
"American culture in this exchange is too all-encompassing. In fact, US
society is equally divided on a range of related issues -- the rights of
women, gays, and non-whites, foreign policy, government spending, the
environment, gun control, etc. Politically, where these differences are
expressed, conservative rural Republicans are worlds apart from liberal
urban Democrats. The latter are very much like Europeans and Canadians, and
their political kinship is apparent in a shared visceral hatred of Bush and
a corresponding adulation for Clinton and the Democrats back to FDR. So at
least half of Americans are not uncommonly "ignorant", it would seem, or as
distant from the sensibilities and values of people on this list as some
have suggested.
