Its the hockey strike. Imagine if all 3 major sports in the US said they weren't going to play for a year - which would probably result in lots of largely meaningless malaise.
The other article struck me as a rightish perspective too - the speech from the throne isn't really leftish. Just not to the right enough for some journalists. In fact most of the newspapers in this country seem to have swung way to the right - numerous editorials saying we should support Bush in Iraq, support Missile Defence, spend vastly more money on defense, and so on.
The C $ is significantly higher than in the past, seems poised to appreciate more, and high oil prices are a boon for Canada as a net oil exporter. The economy is consistently outperforming the US's and the government has large surpluses for the foreseeable future.
