I agree with Miles: "Even though I belong to this "group", I don't think this is anything to celebrate. [...] These people really aren't a coherent group (I have little in common with a lapsed Catholic, other than the fact we don't take communion)." I liked Alan Wolfe's Transformation of American Religion, which argues that the way that all American religions are actually practiced - even fundamentalism - reflects narcissistic elements of contemporary culture. It also suggests that even among people who identify strongly with particular religions, there is a very high level of switching between denominations. There are some great anecdotes too, like the fundamentalist who advises a doubting stockbroker that God wants him to be rich and successful. I liked that one :-). But the survey does show a remarkable shift. Anyone know why? --James
