<DIV>Brian Wilson's fans help spread the hype about the
finally-completed "Smile." With good reason. It's a masterpiece. The Beach Boys
sound shredded and tossed in the air, floating down in fresh arrangements.
Layers of disparate sounds, beautiful melodies, harmonic fluctuations, laughter,
funhouse noises, mini-symphonies crashing into each other, hula music, lyrics
both absurd & heartfelt (via Van Dyke Parks) . . . I mean,
wow. I own a bootleg of the original "Smile" sessions from '67, so I
had a sense of what Wilson was after. But man -- he really put it
together. And that Wilson could, in his early 60s, return to that
abandoned effort, pick it up, polish it and give it such boundless life is
simply inspiring. </DIV>
