"Desi" is Indian as opposed to "videsi", foreign. Due to the colonial
past there is a mildly pejorative ring to the word desi. It is used to
be strongly pejorative a couple of decades ago, but times are
a-changing. There is more nostalgic irony than contempt in the word at
this point.
