This is one Mencken mot that doesn't bear close examination. People *visit* zoos; they don't live in them. This is no pedantic point as I've realized to my dismay that Mencken's acrid view of the US as a society mired in ignorance, piety and visciousness is more factual that I'd suspected.
The only rational choice is to clear out of this sump of stupidity. Unfortunately I seem to have the inertia of a character in a Beckett play or (if anyone remembers him) John Barth novel. Just can't seem to get it together to say sayonara US, however much I despise the joint. So I guess it's lifelong residence in a zoo for me!
