Nike Publishes List of Contract Factories

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nike Inc.(NKE.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's largest athletic shoe company, late on Tuesday published a list of more than 700 contract factories making Nike-branded products worldwide, in a move to head off criticism of working conditions at manufacturers it hires.
Nike said it is the first major company in the footwear and apparel business to disclose its contract supplier base.
It said the list was a response to interest from trade unions and non-governmental organizations that want to see less secrecy in global manufacturing and to tackle health and safety issues.
