In many cases people leave cars in the their yards because they either are 
using them as parts cars or are selling them part by part.  Another reason 
for the cars is that they are a DIY project on the back burner.  As for the 
washing machines, same logic gone wrong.  If they put that shit in the 
backyard there would be no place for the kids to play or have a BBQ.
